The Department for Education (DfE) has released updated standards for school and college estate management, placing a stronger emphasis than ever on creating safe, well-maintained, and compliant learning environments.
These new standards are designed to support governing bodies, trustees and responsible bodies in meeting their legal duties and improving strategic oversight of their estate.
At the heart of the updated guidance is a push for a more proactive, long-term approach to estate planning. This includes a requirement to maintain a 3–5-year estate strategy and an annual asset management plan – both of which must align with curriculum needs, pupil safety and sustainability goals.
For school leaders, it represents a shift from reactive maintenance to strategic estate management. It means understanding the condition and compliance of buildings, having clear procedures for emergency preparedness, and prioritising investment in systems that ensure health, safety, and security for all users of the premises.
One of the core expectations is a clear and consistent approach to statutory compliance. Schools must be able to demonstrate that fire and security systems are not only installed to appropriate standards but are also tested, maintained, and recorded correctly.
This extends to fire risk assessments, access control, intruder alarms, CCTV systems, and emergency lighting, each playing a role in safeguarding students, staff, and visitors.
There is a new expectation to embed sustainability into estate decisions. That includes selecting systems and suppliers that support energy efficiency, carbon reduction and long-term value.
In this evolving landscape, many schools are seeking partners who not only understand compliance, but who also bring a collaborative, consultative approach to planning and maintaining safe and secure environments.
Amthal is proud to be supporting schools and colleges across the UK in meeting these expectations.
From carrying out full fire and security audits to delivering compliant system design, installation, and maintenance, Amthal works alongside estate managers and leadership teams to ensure every aspect of safety and security meets the latest government guidance sustainably, helping to future-proof school estates for years to come.
