Meaningful increases in “high-volume offences” such as domestic burglary and car crime are among some of the concerns cited in the latest official crime statistics.
The survey results, highlighting crime levels between September 2016 and September 2017, show domestic burglary rose by 32% to 261,965 offences and vehicle thefts rose 18% to 443,577.
The results are part of an overall 14% year on year increase in offences recorded by forces across England and Wales; with the most significant rise, revealed by the Office for National Statistics, seen in knife and gun crime.

Amthal offers the following top tips to protect your home from burglary:
- Back To Basics: Check your locks across the home as installing certain approved lock types can not only reduce your chance of a burglar gaining entry but also ensure that your home insurance premium is reduced.
- Be Alarmed: Alarm systems are one of the best forms of home protection. Home alarm systems immediately inform emergency authorities and warn homeowners of any potential dangers. Seeing that a home has an alarm system often prevents an intruder from even attempting a burglary. Hearing an alarm go off usually sends a burglar running.
- Look Like You’re At Home: Burglars scour neighbourhoods looking for homeowners who are away from their home for an extended period of time. Automatic timers are great ways to turn lights on and off while you’re away and ensure your home looks occupied, even if it isn’t!
- Shine A Light: A smart way to keep thieves away is to use lighting. Lighting with an infrared detector automatically turns on when someone is in a specific zone or area. No burglar wants to be in easy view while committing a crime.
- Be Seen and Heard: Police recommend homes utilise modern security solutions such as CCTV and Visual Verification. Even doorbells can now offer video capability to ensure you can see exactly who is at your door, before you open it, all from the convenience or your smart phone!
- Don’t Get Complacent: We know the score – don’t leave keys or possessions in easy reach – but many still ignore. You may be part of a neighbourhood watch, and have the latest products and solutions in place, but one key under the plant pot is all it takes.
