The National Business Crime Centre’s (NBCC) has launched a new campaign, “Tackling Retail Crime Together” designed to align the priorities of police, retailers, and government under the new National Strategic Plan for tackling business crime.
Retail crime continues to place significant pressure on convenience stores and independent retailers. With rising incidents of theft, abuse of retail staff and ongoing threats to community businesses, the NBCC’s campaign addresses a critical issue. Its goal is to coordinate action across sectors, clarify the police response and ensure staff feel supported when incidents occur.
The campaign outlines a practical framework to reduce crime by improving intelligence sharing, enhancing reporting processes and encouraging joint working between local police forces, the retail sector and partner organisations.
It builds on the national strategy’s five priorities: prevention, engagement, response, support for victims and stronger use of business data — all areas we actively champion through our work with retail clients.
Creating Safer Retail Environments
Meaningful crime prevention requires effective security measures, which when combined with police engagement and retailer commitment, play a vital role in creating safer retail environments.
At the heart of the campaign is the principle of shared responsibility. Crime reduction demands collaboration and a clear understanding of roles, including how data is gathered, incidents are escalated and offenders held accountable.
As the campaign highlights, improving communication and consistency of response is essential. Our team routinely partners with site managers and staff to review procedures, provide training on system use and incident reporting, ensuring security technology is managed to remain effective and fit for purpose.
Tackling Retail Crime Together sets a positive tone for progress. By acknowledging the scale of the problem and offering a coordinated path forward this campaign offers a foundation for lasting change.
At Amthal, we are already working side-by-side with retailers to deliver the actionable steps this campaign calls for.
From site specific risk assessments, integrated CCTV and intruder alarms to access control systems and remote monitoring, we collaborate closely with retailers to implement solutions that support the NBCC’s aims.
